Animals in the Southern Eifel
Thanks to the diverse nature of the Eifel region, there are many different animals. During your stay in the Eifel you may come across one or more of them. It is therefore not surprising that this area is a popular destination for nature lovers.
From migratory birds to kingfishers
In the spring and autumn, migratory birds fly over the area in large numbers. In order to have a nice bite to eat, they settle down in the insect-rich nature. Dragonflies and butterflies, such as the blue firefly and the black-striped St. Jacob's butterfly, are a tasty treat for these birds. The kingfisher, dippers and the grey wagtail can also be admired from time to time in this beautiful area.
Is it a snake or a hazel worm?
During a walk in this beautiful area, you may also come across lizards, the hazel worm and the rare smooth snake. They warm themselves up to the sun, so chances are you will see one. Also, while walking, pay close attention to movements in the trees. A squirrel jumping from branch to branch to scavenge his meal may watch you. And a little further on you may see a deer frolicking away.
Do you hear some rustling in the forest? It could be a bird, or a mouse looking for its way back to its safe hiding place.
The nocturnal animals of the Eifel
Even the owl can be heard when night falls. And the bats also come to life when it begins to get dark, to fill their bellies with the many insects that the area has to offer. Meanwhile, a fox is also looking for a tasty meal. But beware, for wild boars are also very active at dusk. And you would rather not run into a mother and her cubs on an evening walk.
Hunters in the hunting huts
There are several hunting huts in the Southern Eifel. The region’s avid hunters use these. It is therefore wise to leash your dog when walking through the wooded area. And in the evening during the hunting season, do not walk past these places to avoid unpleasant incidents.
Beware of ticks
After a beautiful walk through the area, it is time to check you, your family and your dog for ticks. This insect likes the high grass of the Eifel region and eagerly takes the opportunity to feast on your blood.
