Sights of Neuerburg

The romantic town of Neuerburg is not large, yet it has a few gems to see. It is definitely worth a visit. It still has a medieval character thanks to the castle, the Beilsturm and the city walls.

The castle is at the top of the list of sights in Neuerburg. The castle was built in the twelfth century and has gone through many changes in the course of time. Among others, Neuerburg Castle was demolished in 1692 by the troops of the French king Louis XIV. The Youth Association converted the ruins of the castle into a youth hostel in 1926.

You can see the castle from several angles when you are in the centre. Be sure to hike up to get a closer look at the castle. You can visit the courtyard, the chapel and ruins of the castle free of charge. From the keep, admire the magnificent view over the valley.

The Beilsturm and the city wall

DSC0813 In the picturesque town is the Beilsturm. This is a medieval tower that was part of Neuerburg's fortification wall. This tower was built in the 16th century. Until the 18th century, the tower was also the residence of the firewatcher, the Feuerwachter. From the tower, he kept an eye out for fires in the surrounding area or in the town.

In 1818, however, a major fire raged in the city, destroying part of the city. After this fire, parts of the city wall were used to rebuild the houses. Fortunately, the tower also remained largely intact and has been used as an observation tower since the 1980s.

Today, you can climb the tower to admire the magnificent view. Climb all the way to the highest platform and admire the view of the picturesque town of Neuerburg and its surroundings. In the north of the town, you can see the remains of the wall. You can climb the tower free of charge all year round.

When strolling through the city's winding streets, be sure to take a look at the other sights as well. For example, the town has a 700-year-old oak tree with a 46-centimetre-high black statue, which serves as a pilgrimage destination for the 'black madonna'.

In 1636, the town was plagued by the plague. The plague cross is a daily reminder of this. A little higher up in the town, on a large rock, is the 500-year-old late Gothic parish church of St. Nicholas. Walk past the Eligiuskapelle, which was built in 1437. When you walk across the market square, you will see the town pump. And be sure to visit the city park, at the end of which you will find the waterfall.

Tip: a walk through and along the city is a nice way to discover the sights of Neuerburg.

Slightly out of the centre, near the supermarkets of the town, you will find a railway tunnel of the Enz cycle path. As this cycle path is a former railway track, you will also find signs here with information about the former railway track.
